Cycle tour day 2

For some cycle touring is hopping short distances city to city and sight seeing around.
For some cycle touring is racing on the lightest possible bike as far as possible in just a short time, sleeping in a hotel each night.
For some cycle touring is packing up their bike with as much as it can hold and steadily travelling across cities, countries, continents.

These are very different things, and I have done each to some extent. Despite their differences, there is one thing that binds these all together. The journey. Cycle touring is a journey.

An endless climb to an unreachable summit, careening down a gravel path with a storm roaring down on you, spending hours searching for a place to camp.
Eating a fresh lunch at the only supermarket for seventy kilometers, taking a break at the peak of an awesome descent, taking a break on a bridge overlooking a crashing river and a sky impossibly blue.

All of these are part of a journey. This is what binds us cycle tourists all together.
This is what cycle touring is.

We stopped at a campsite tonight. We recharged our batteries and washed our bodies and clothes. It was nice.
